Heavy rainfall in London in late July saw water seeping through the British Museum risking damage to many Greek artefacts including the Parthenon Sculptures according to media reports.
The opening of several galleries with Greek artefacts including the Parthenon sculptures has been delayed following a several month closure, due to water leaking in the museum's Greek galleries reported The Art Newspaper.
According to the media outlet, a British Museum spokeswoman confirmed that “there was some water ingress in one of the [Greek] galleries” in July, noting that the 'poor state of the rooms housing the museum’s Greek and Assyrian treasures has been noted many times before.'
In 2019 Greece's Culture Minister Lina Mendoni saw images of mold and footage of the damp and mold stains on the Greek gallery hall’s ceiling, which suffered a leak during a rainstorm.
“The abandonment shown in the pictures from the British Museum reinforces Greece’s rightful demand for the sculptures’ permanent return to Athens and their reunification with the Parthenon,” she had said.
