Turkish President keen to meet Taliban leadership to bring 'peace' to Afghanistan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that he could meet with the Taliban leadership in Afghanistan in an effort to end the civil conflict in the country.

Erdogan made the statement during a television interview with CNN Turk, at a time when the Taliban are gaining more territory and defeating government forces.

Turkey has offered to deploy troops at Kabul airport following the withdrawal of NATO forces and has been holding talks with the United States for weeks.

In return for guarding the airport, Erdogan has demanded certain economic, logistical and diplomatic rewards from the US.

Meanwhile the Taliban have warned Turkey not to send troops to Afghanistan to guard the international airport in Kabul, but Ankara insists on its position.
