Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas sparked some controversy after making what were perceived to be 'anti-vaxx' statements as reported recently by Greek City Times.
When asked by a reporter whether he has been vaccinated Tsitipas responded:
“No I haven not. No one has told me anything. No one has made it a mandatory thing to be vaccinated, I am sure that at some point I will be vaccinated, but until it becomes mandatory, I am not going to do it,”
His statement provoked strong reaction on Greek social media including from people like Professor Elias Mosialos and journalist Nikos Hatzinikolaou, who were not impressed with his stance, whilst others accused Stefanos of hypocrisy given he had previously backed the Government campaign against the coronavirus encouraging Greeks to abide by the measures:
Meanwhile in an attempt to possibly calm the waters, and distance himself from the controversial perception of an 'anti-vaxxer' given his previous endorsement of the Government's messaging, Stefanos Tsitsipas posted a vague comment on his Instagram account:
"By looking out for yourself, you also look out for those who stand with you." posted the Greek tennis star.
