The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited Kalymnos yesterday to attend festive events in honour of the Battle of the Elder which took place during the Greek War of Independence and saw a handful of Greek ships defeat the Ottoman fleet in those waters.
Mrs. Sakellaropoulou was welcomed by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis, the representative of the Parliament Vassilios Ypsilantis, the Governor of the South Aegean region Georgios Chatzimarkos, the mayor of Kalymnos Dimitrios Diakomichalis and the prefect of Kalymnos Manolis Mousellis.
to attend the festive events for the Battle of the Elder, organized by the Municipality of Kalymnos and the District of Kalymnos.
After the eulogy and the laying of the wreath, the President stated:
"Today we celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of the Elder, one of the most glorious pages of the Greek Revolution.
"At a particularly critical juncture of the Struggle [for Independence], a handful of Greek ships defeated the Ottoman fleet in these waters, thanks to the skill, bravery and courage of their arsonists and captains. They drove the Turkish-Egyptian fleet away, keeping the flame of freedom alive.
The memory of their glorious victory accompanies us, guides us and inspires us ".
