Gomes confessed to the murder and is serving a 22-year sentence.

At the end of the trial, which lasted three days, a judge described the crime as “beastly.”

A relative of the police officer had also been jailed for the case as he helped hide the body of the Greek diplomat.

He had served a one-year sentence and is now released.

The 59-year-old diplomat had served as Greece’s consul in Rio de Janeiro from 2001 to 2004, and had returned to Brazil as ambassador the year he was assassinated.

He had been married to François de Souza Oliveira since 2004 and they had a daughter who was ten years old when he was murdered.
