For the first time in its history, the Acropolis rally will “storm” through the centre of the Greek capital, with government ministers and officials currently meeting to discuss the challenging traffic measures and closures to facilitate the historical event.
According to the organisers, racing through the heart of the Athens will create a unique setting, with the images broadcast to every corner of the globe.
Syntagma Square, the most populous busiest location of Athens and of Greece will host the EKO Acropolis Rally, being the point where the World Rally Championship will be “introduced” to every citizen or visitor of the Greek capital.
Inside the square, from the morning of Wednesday, September 8, the sponsors of the rally will welcome the public in their specially designed stands, where various promotional activities will be held. At the same time, an exhibition of racing and classic cars will be held in the square. Access will be free but with all the pandemic protection measures applied.
Specifically for Thursday, September 9, the streets around Syntagma Square will compose the 0.98km long, first special stage of the rally, COSMOTE 5G Athens Stage, from where the first car roar of the EKO Acropolis Rally will be heard, at 18:08.
Starting from Queen Amalias Avenue, the rally cars will pass in front of the building of the Hellenic Parliament and then, turning successively to the left, they will finish the stage on Georgiou A’ street, having circled Syntagma square.
For safety reasons and in order to avoid overcrowding, Syntagma Square will be evacuated from 13.30 on Thursday until the completion of the COSMOTE 5G Athens Stage (20:30), when it will be re-opened for the public but now, hosting all the rally cars that will remain parked there until Friday morning.
Traffic regulation adjustments will apply on the roads of the wider area, however the traffic will not be stopped. In any case, the Organization of the Rally warmly urges the fans of the EKO Acropolis Rally to avoid overcrowding, both for safety reasons and -mainly- for reasons related to the possibility of Covid-19 spread.
COSMOTE 5G Athens Stage will be broadcast LIVE from ERT TV, as, of course, from COSMOTE TV, which will continuously cover everything about the rally from 6 to 13 of September, with the dedicated pop-up channel «COSMOTE Sport Acropolis Rally».
Meanwhile a meeting was held at the Citizen Protection Ministry on Monday, chaired by Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos and with the participation of Deputy Sports Minister Lefteris Avgenakis, to discuss the traffic measures that need to be taken during the EKO Acropolis Rally taking place on Thursday, September 9.
The rally is expected to create extensive traffic problems since it starts at the Acropolis and goes through Syntagma Square in the heart of the city. This will mean that the entire city centre will be closed to traffic from 11:00 on Thursday morning until 21:00 at night.
