Mitsotakis reassures Greece's continued support for Cyprus problem

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Wednesday with the new General Secretary of Cyprus' AKEL party, Stefanos Stefanou

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Wednesday with the new General Secretary of Cyprus' AKEL party, Stefanos Stefanou, congratulating him on his election and assuring him of Greece's continued support for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

"I consider it my obligation to always meet the leaders of the parties in Cyprus in order to have an honest conversation. The issues, which concern us, always require absolute coordination between Greece and Cyprus," Mitsotakis said.

The prime minister reiterated that the only acceptable framework for negotiations on the Cyprus issue are the decisions of the United Nations Security Council, which calls for a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty and citizenship.

He added that necessary conditions for the solution of the Cyprus problem are the abolition of the obsolete system of guarantees and the withdrawal of Turkish troops occupying the northern portion of the island.

The discussion examined Turkish provocativeness, with emphasis on the illegal actions in Varosha, which are completely contrary to UN Security Council resolutions and the positions of the international community.

It also makes it particularly difficult to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
