The Russian research team behind the creation of the Sputnik coronavirus team were in Rethymno, Crete at the commemoration event for Greece-Russia Year 2021 on Tuesday reported Creta Post.
Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis had the opportunity to meet the research team and congratulate them, especially its leader, epidemiologist Natalia Nikitenko, on their important contribution in the struggle against the pandemic.
Addressing the Russian research team, he said that "your scientific competence, your effective medical research, your unwavering faith in humanity and in protecting public health have rendered you a modern Prometheus, according to the Greek myth and its powerful symbolism." The regional official also noted that the event "reminds us that the two countries' peoples maintain a long friendship and strong ties since the birth of the modern Greek state."
The event was organised by the Honorary Consul of Russia for Crete and the Dodecanese Nikos Daskalantonakis.
