Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the earthquake stricken areas in Crete on Tuesday after returning from France where he signed a historic military pact with President Emmanuel Macron.

The Prime Minister visited the municipality of Archanes Asterousia, at the areas worst affected by Monday's earthquake, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale which saw severe damages to  buildings and road networks.

"I wanted to be in Crete, close to my fellow citizens to inspect the damage from yesterday's earthquake myself. To express again my condolences to the family of our fellow citizen, who was so unjustly lost yesterday and to wish a speedy recovery to all the injured." wrote the Greek PM on a social media post.

The PM also later visited the older section of the town of Arkalochori, where extensive damages to buildings is also apparent. While there, he spoke with local residents, who expressed their concerns about their situation and asked for the state's support.

Meanwhile the island experienced a new aftershock registering 4.6 on the Richter scale at 18:13 on Tuesday.

Its epicentre was 1 km south of Arkalochori, in the Minoas Pediada municipality at Heraklion.

After Monday's destructive 5.8 Richter tremor, the area continues to be jolted by aftershocks, some registering as high as 5.4 on the Richter scale.
