Greek court sentences Turkish migrant smuggler to life in prison

The five-member Court of Appeal of the Dodecanese sentenced a 55-year-old Turkish human trafficker to life imprisonment for a shipwreck that occurred give years ago in Farmakonisi.

In fact, according to Rodiaki, the Turkish citizen received 56 life sentences.

On January 22, 2016 at 12:50AM, the human trafficker began his voyage to smuggle 56 Iraqi men, women and children into Greece.

At 9:50AM, the boat ran aground in a rocky area east of Farmakonisi. Only 18 men, 10 women and 12 minors managed to land as the others had died.

The Greek Coast Guard and support crews from the EU and UK located and retrieved the bodies of five children and three women. One girl was rescued, but another eight remain missing, including six children.
