Greece’s second largest  Thessaloniki and popular Chalkidiki peninsula in northern Greece are among four regions going into  lockdown as of 06:00 on Friday, following a surge in coronavirus infections and a rise in ICU admissions, authorities said on Thursday.

The other two areas are Larissa, in central Greece, and Kilkis, north of Thessaloniki, with circulation  banned in all four regions from 01:00 to 06:00 except for reasons of going to and from work and for serious health reasons.

In addition, music at stores and entertainment venues is banned for 24 hours. The measures will be in force until 06:00 on Friday (Oct. 8).

Several other areas will also be placed on alert, without curfews so far: Drama, Imathia, Kastoria, Kavala, Pella, Pieria and Xanthi.

The general ban on gathering of over 20 people in public or private spaces, including homes, is still in place throughout Greece. Fines for violators range from 50,000 to 200,000 euros for the owner or leaser of a property.
