On Santorini, Gordon Ramsay says his best meal ever was for Princess Diana; D’Campo his mother’s last dish (VIDEO)

After his ‘controversial’ comments that Greek cuisine is better than Italian in an episode of ITV’s “Gordon, Gino and Fred’s Go Greek,”  which sparked an animated debate with Italian chef Gino D’Acampo, international chef Gordan Ramsay gave audiences a more sombre and emotional moment on Monday’s episode.

Gordon, Gino and Fred are seen strolling along the cobble-stoned walkways sculptured into Santorini’s famous cliff face, with Ramsay telling them he was taking them to one of the most famous culinary experts on the island: yiayia Katina.

Famous on the island of Santorini and beyond, yiayia Katina, Ramsay declares, makes the ‘best moussaka dish’ in the world.

Soon enough the trio get to have dinner with yiayia Katina, on the breathtaking balcony of her cliff-edged home, salute her hospitality and raise their glasses to what truly was a magical culinary experience.

As the trio depart and come to a point on the cliff-face where they find themselves mesmerised by the specular view from Oia, chef Gino D’Acampo asks Gordon Ramsay what was the most memorable dish of his life.

“Cooking for Lady Di once.” responded Ramsay as he stares at the view mixing his admiration for both Santorini and Princess Diana.

“Just beautiful. I mean, here is renowned as the supermodel of the islets — Santorini — and she [Lady Di], by far, was one of the most gracious members of the royal family I’ve ever met,” he added.

Gordon had previously said in an interview that he was very fortunate to cook for her at Aubergine back in the early days.

“When she came in she was so normal. No airs and graces, security outside, she had the lunch menu and didn’t go à la carte.”

After giving his response, Ramsay returned the question to D’Acampo asking him for the most memorable dish.

“My mother’s” responds D’Acampo, holding back tears.

An emotional D’Acampo said that his mother’s dish,  day before she died, was the most significant dish of his life. It’s as though she knew she was going to die said D’Acampo, adding that the dish felt like his mother had poured all her heart and love into it.
