Professor Theoklis Zaoutis takes over the position of the president of the National Public Health Organisation (EODY).
Zaoutis earlier met with Health Minister Thanos Plevris.
Theoklis Zaoutis is Professor of Pediatrics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Professor of Epidemiology at Perelman Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he was head of the Infections Department from 2014 to 2018.
He received most of his medical education in the United States, with the exception of his doctorate, which he completed at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
In 2015, he was one of the two finalists for the position of Director of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has been a member of the National Committee for the Protection of Public Health against the coronavirus COVID-19 of the Health Ministry.
