HISTORIC: Greek-French Defence Agreement ratified in Parliament with 191 in favour

Greek-French security defence deal ratified on October 7, 2021.

With a wider majority of 191 Members of Parliament, the Plenary Session of the Parliament ratified the Greek-French defense agreement.

MP's of the ruling New Democracy, along with the Movement for Change (KINAL) and Hellenic Solution voted in favor of the Greek-French defense agreement.

109 from opposition party SYRIZA, as well as the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and MeRA25 voted against it.

Independent MP Konstantinos Bogdanos also voted in favor, while Konstantina Adamou, also independent from MeRA25, did the same.

Earlier, during a heated debate between political leaders, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attacked SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras for his choice to vote against the bill, and called on him to clarify whether he would repeal or change it if he takes office again.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis"If your doctrine was that Greece has no sea borders and everyone enters whenever they want, we tell you that we are changing this doctrine.

"We are guarding the borders and in February 2020 we did not allow Turkey to violate our borders by sending thousands of migrants.

"We are changing your dogma, Mr. Tsipras. If, Mr. Tsipras, your dogma was to lease frigates, obviously we are changing it because this is not a serious dogma.

"The Armed Forces want long-term planning."

He continued: "If Mr. Tsipras the dogma of the country was to constantly talk about International Law but to do nothing else at other levels, we change it for that and signed off on the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) with Egypt and Italy.

"If our doctrine was to leave our submarines without torpedoes and our fleet in a situation that made surveillance difficult, of course we are changing that doctrine.

"If our doctrine was to have Mr. Kammenos as Minister of Defense, which was a combination of kitsch and ridiculousness, well, then we are changing this doctrine and I am proud of the leadership we have today in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"You said that I am anxious to close the armaments programs as if we were doing our own program. I am anxious, Mr. Tsipras. Great agony.

"When I have Turkey facing the threat of casus belli and you attack aggressively, I am anxious. Mr Tsipras' question is whether you were anxious.

On the other hand, Mr. Tsipras described the agreement as "bad" , but refrained from stating that he would try to change Article 2, which concerns the French assistance for the protection of the Greek territory.

This was despite the fact that SYRIZA voted against the agreement. disagreeing with this provision, believing that the Greek EEZ is not protected.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias also addressed a strong appeal to the opposition parties, and especially SYRIZA, to vote in favor of the Greek-French defense agreement.

He emphasized that "there is no margin of national responsibility that leads to the non-voting of the Agreement. I call on you in the name of national unanimity and the national need that it is obvious to vote for it."

Regarding the escalating Turkish provocation, he said:

"Please do not lose sight of it. In recent weeks or days, Turkey has put forward another thought that is beyond the unbelievable ones it has already put forward.

"It claims that the demilitarization of the eastern Aegean islands is a condition for recognizing Greek sovereignty over these islands.

"That is, if the islands are not demilitarized, they are not Greek. They protested when one of our ministers took a picture over these islands."

At the same time, he added: "When we have this Turkey towards us with this attitude, aspirations and behavior, do you consider that Greece has the luxury of not agreeing with a superpower to sign this agreement?"
