Matchroom Boxing announces plan to promote Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos

Eddie Hearn announced today that Matchroom Boxing would take over the promotion of Teofimo Lopez’s defence of his lightweight world titles against IBF mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr after the IBF ruled that Triller had defaulted on its purse bid after yet again trying to move the date of the fight.

This latest time, Triller tried to postpone the fight from October 4 to October 16 in order to avoid going up against Monday Night Football, and had received the blessing of Teofimo Lopez to do so, but not that of George Kambosos. With the IBF putting its foot down — after Triller already accepted that they would not be promoting the fight — Triller loses its $1.2 million deposit, which deservedly goes into the fighters’ pockets.

The money will instead be split between the fighters, with Lopez’s side to receive $US782,340 ($A1,072,227) from Triller’s lost deposit and Kambosos’ team will share $US421,260 ($A577,353).

“Delighted to confirm that Matchroomboxing will be promoting the big Teofimo Lopez v George Kambosos unified match up live on DAZN,” Hearn confirmed on Twitter.

“Date and venue announced shortly. Let’s get this show on the road.”

Kambosos, who holds a record of 19 wins and no losses, has not fought since defeating Welsh boxer Lee Selby by split decision in October last year.

Matchroom is yet to announce a date and venue for the fight but it is expected to be held in November or early December in a city on the East Coast of the US such as New York.
