2,000 year old Roman Era Statue Head retrieved from sea in Preveza

The head of a statue from Roman times was retrieved from the sea area of ​​Preveza, at a depth of about 10 metres reported the Greek Ministry of Culture.

The discovery, a figurative head of a statue, is probably from the period of Antoninus or Severus (2nd - 3rd century AD).

The head, made of Pentelic marble, is almost intact except for parts of the headdress, the nose, the right ear and a small part of the chin, while it was found partially covered with marine organisms.

The location of the discovery was pointed out by Mr. Dimitris Karamanidis, who informed the Port Authority of Preveza and convened a specialist team in which an archaeologist of EFA Preveza also participated. The team watched the retrieval of the artefact which was then transported to the Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis, where desalination and maintenance works began immediately.
