Cyprus and Egypt signed on Saturday morning in Nicosia a Memorandum of Understanding on the electrical interconnection of the two countries, with which Nicosia and Cairo express political will to facilitate the timely issuance of permits required for the construction of the project.
The Memorandum was signed on behalf of Cyprus by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasa Pilides and on behalf of Egypt by the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Sources Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi.
In a joint written statement, the two Ministers state recognise that the electricity interconnection of the two countries is an important component of their ongoing strong relations, but also of their strategic cooperation.
They consider this interconnection a great step forward in terms of synergies, required to facilitate the integration of additional renewable energy sources into their respective mixtures of electricity and primary energy.
