Athens traffic will be restricted today Tuesday (19/10), as the city prepares to welcome the Olympic Flame and host a ceremony for its hand over to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games at the Panathenaic Stadium.

Restrictions will involve both shutting down of streets and parking bans, especially around the stadium and as far as Vassilissis Sofias and Vouliagmenis. Measures will be put in place by 06:00, depending on the location, and will be lifted at 13:00.

The flame lighting ceremony took place yesterday at Ancient Olympia where a group of anti-Beijing Winter Olympic protestors were arrested after they attempted to disrupt the ceremony.

Protestors against Beijing’s hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics were also arrested yesterday in Athens, after breaking into a closed off area of the Acropolis and endangering an area undergoing restoration work.
