MP Dora Bakoyannis, the sister of the current Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and mother of the current Athens mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, on Monday announced that she has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in a post on social media.

"It is never easy to learn that you have cancer," Bakoyannis said in her message, adding that the disease was still at a very early stage and that she intends to continue with her work. "I have never backed away from any fight in my life. I will continue to work as normal and to fight for this country which I love, alongside my treatment," she said.

According to the MP, who has served as a minister in various posts in the past, as well as being elected Athens mayor, she is among 500 people that are diagnosed with the disease in Greece each year and she has the best possible prognosis, emphasising that it was a disease "that can be fought and beaten".

"I am in the hands of the excellent doctors that our country possesses and feel determined to achieve this victory and very optimistic about the future," she concluded.
