Exploring beautiful Nafplio in Autumn

Nafplio

Nafplio

Only two hours away from Athens, Nafplio has been named Greece’s prettiest and most romantic towns. It is set in a breathtaking location, on a small port beneath the towering Palamidi fortress, and is filled with gorgeous narrow streets, elegant Venetian houses, neoclassical mansions, and fabulous museums. It’s also a place where you can wine, dine, drink coffee at your leisure as well as enjoy some shopping while staying at boutique hotels that are modern yet classic.

Nafplio

Nafplio was for a brief period the first capital of the Hellenic Republic following the Greek Revolution of 1821, up until 1934. This magical town is now a perfect destination for all seasons but it really is an ideal Autumn getaway because unlike many Aegean islands, which usually begin hibernating at the end of October, Nafplio is still buzzing in the cooler months.

Taverns, restaurants, cafes, bars museums, and archaeological sites are still open in Autumn and Winter, and there is so much to do without even thinking about needing to head to the beach!

Nafplio is home to an Archaeological Museum housed in a splendid Venetian building on Syntagma Square. The permanent exhibition features statues, jewellery, costumes, sculptures, ceramics and rare artefacts from the Neolithic Period.

Make sure you also make your way to the Komboloi Museum, which opened in 1998 to showcase the history of Greece’s famous beads.

Nearby are also the first Greek Parliament, the War Museum, the Municipal Gallery, old Turkish Mosques, Trion Navarhon Square, the Peloponnesian Folk Art Museum, and more.

Like Paris, this gorgeous town is ideal for walking as you can leisurely stroll and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Old Town, with its array of bougainvillea-filled streets, hidden squares, and stunning neoclassical mansions.

Nafplio

Nafplio has many casual taverns that are ideal for those who love indulging in classic Greek dishes and some of our favourite eateries include Kavalaris Corner Mezedopoleoi, Pidalio, Karamalis, To Omorfo Tavernaki and Karnakaris, which all do Greek gastronomy proud.

And if you walk up and down the old town, you will find so many cafes and bars where you can enjoy a fine wine, throw back a beer, or sip on a cocktail of your choice.

Nafplio

Nafplio's streets burst with boutique hotels and you can choose among luxurious hotels, stunning mansions, traditional guesthouses, and lovely budget apartments, as this picturesque town really caters to all!
