Mitsotakis meets with Sisi: Greece and Egypt expand strategic relations

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at 09:30 on Tuesday morning at the Maximos Mansion.

The Mitsotakis-Sisi meeting occurred only a few days after the signing of the memorandum on energy interconnection of the two countries.

The cable that will connect Greece with Egypt will pass through the demarcated Exclusive Economic Zone of the two countries.

The relevant cooperation agreement for the interconnection of the electricity networks of Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Egypt is expected to be formalised today with the signing of a memorandum by the competent ministers, in the presence of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Nikos Anastasiadis and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Government sources note that the agreement confirms the establishment of a strategic relationship between Athens and Cairo.

It will be the first interconnection of Europe with Africa for the implementation of a project that will pass through the officially demarcated Exclusive Economic Zones of Greece-Egypt and will be able to transport to Europe.

This is at a time when, due to the energy crisis, the debate on the supply and channeling of energy through alternative sources is at the heart of the debate at European level.

In parallel with the work of the tripartite Greece-Cyprus-Egypt Summit, a business conference focusing on the energy and shipping sectors will be held at a central hotel in order to boost the development of sustainable cooperation between the three countries.

At a time when Ankara wants to restore channels of communication with Cairo to overturn the terms of the partial demarcation agreement of the Exclusive Economic Zone between Greece and Egypt, Mitsotakis with Al-Sisi sent a message that their alliance is not only diplomatic or military, but is expanding into the economy which would create close ties and common interests for many decades.
