367 Afghan citizens, mostly judges, arrive in Athens

Afghan nationals - mostly judges - arrived in Athens today through the Georgian capital of Tbilisi as part of commitments made by Greece and other EU member states to provide humanitarian assistance to at-risk Afghans.

According to the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, another flight with 98 people is expected in the next few hours. All 367 Afghan citizens are coming to Greece for temporary accommodation.

The flight was welcomed at the airport "El. Venizelos" by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Themistoklis Demiris, the Secretary General of Immigration Policy, Patroklos Georgiadis, the Deputy Governor of the Asylum Service, Ioannis Sfyrakis and the Director of the Asylum Service, Evangelia Ktistaki.

All 269 Afghan nationals on arrival were rapidly tested, recorded and transported to accommodation.

The transfer to the apartments was carried out with the assistance of the IOM, while their safe transfer was carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
