Colombia’s most wanted drug trafficker, Dario Antonio Ushuga, also known as “Otoniel”, has been arrested in the northwestern part of the country, the Colombian government announced on Saturday.
“Congratulations to the security forces (…) on the arrest of Dairo Antonio Usuga, also known as ‘Otoniel’, the senior leader of the Clan del Golfo,” said Emilio Archila, adviser to President Ivan Duque.
The Clan del Golfo is the most powerful drug cartel gang in Colombia, the world’s largest cocaine exporter.
The arrest of Otoniel is the biggest blow the Colombian government has dealt to organized crime in the country. Otoniel was also wanted by the United States, which offered a $ 5 million reward for his capture.
Otoniel, 50, led the Clan del Golfo formed by former members of far-right paramilitary groups fighting left-wing guerrillas until the 2010s.
The gang is present in almost 300 municipalities across the country, according to the independent Indepaz institute.
