Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement on Monday that he was shoked by the death of Fofi Gennimata, leader of the KINAL political party.
"I was shocked and saddened to learn about the death of Fofi Gennimata. I say goodbye to her with respect," Mitsotakis said, adding: "But also flooded with thoughts caused by her so unjust and untimely loss, because politics is, above all, humane.
"Fofi was a fighter of life, fighting with dignity the difficulties of her health and the enemy that struck her family.
"And she stood up to the end, serving her duty. It thus became a symbol of courage for all women, but also for men suffering from serious illnesses.
"To the warm condolences of all Greek women and men to the children, her husband and her own people, I add my own."
Mitsotakis was informed about the death of KINAL leader Fofi Gennimata upon his arrival in Saudi Arabia for a two-day official visit, the prime minister's office said.
In the same announcement was underlined that "Kyriakos Mitsotakis has changed his schedule and will return to Athens on Tuesday night. His tour to the islands of the Dodecanese on Wednesday and Thursday is also cancelled."
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras joint Mitsotakis and sent his condolences over the loss of Gennimata.
"With deep grief I was informed on Fofi Gennimata's death. She fought for her life with dignity and determination until the end," he said.
"Her loss makes the country's political life poorer. My sincere condolences to her family and comrades," Tsipras added.
The Secretary General of the Communist Paty of Greece (KKE) Central Committee, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, said on Monday:
"I express my deep sorrow for the loss of Fofi Gennimata, leader of KINAL, to whom I say goodbye with great respect for her honesty, but also for the bravery with which she gave the battle for life. My warmest condolences to her family and the members of KINAL."
President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou in a statement that Gennimata was "a brave woman who was fighting with dignity all the battles of her life, the smallest and the biggest ones, without ever losing her bright smile."
"She has consistently and politically served her principles and the public life. With a kindness of soul that we will all miss.
"Warm condolences to her family, to her own people.
"Their pain during these difficult hours is also ours."
