Greek PM: New cancer prevention program will be named in honour of Fofi Gennimata

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Wednesday via social media that a new cancer prevention program to be launched will be named after the late veteran politician Fofi Gennimata who died of cancer on Monday, World Breast Cancer Day.

Mitsotakis announced the start of the program on the day the Movement for Change (KINAL) party leader was buried.

The Prime Minister said the program would begin with a pre-symptomatic check for cancer of the breast, the most common form of cancer threatening women, and the one cancer that can be healed if found early enough.

In 2022, a special pilot program will allow all women aged 50-69 to get free examinations for the illness. “Technology will help us inform women by email of their annual breast exam,” the premier said, “while health clinics will be able to offer counseling so we may change dangerous habits and behaviours,” he added.

The program, he said, “is an obligation of the state which is now even greater, as it will be accompanied by Fofi’s strength and smile.” It will be also accompanied by the message that “the efforts for a better public health must always unite us.”
