German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens yesterday, for the last time before she steps down as chancellor this year.

Merkel and the Greek Prime Minister are expected to reflect on Greek-German relations, past, present and future with many speculating that talk of Germany's implicit backing of Turkey in the context of the East Med and defence, will be inevitable.

Following a long and distinguished  political career, Merkel reflected on her 'austerity' stance towards Greece during the economic crisis, and admitted that she demanded too much from Greek society.

The German Chancellor  arrived in Greece at the invitation of the Greek Prime Minister, at shortly before 20:00 on Thursday evening.

The German leader will begin her official visit with an address to young people at the Goethe Institute at 09:00 today Friday (29/10). She will then meet with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Mansion at 10:15, and meet with Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion at 10:50, before making joint statements to the press.

Greek police introduced traffic restrictions for the visit for the afternoon and evening of Thursday (Oct. 28) and the morning hours until midday on Friday, diverting traffic.
