Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented his government’s vision for a green transition at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) on Monday in Glasgow, warning also that the devastating summer fires that ravaged Greece recently were a direct result of climate change.
At the conference, which is hosting 130 world leaders, the Greek Prime Minister noted that Greece’s carbon emissions footprint is low, and the country can contribute significantly to green transition.
To that end, noted Mitsotakis, Greece has undertaken several initiatives, including encouraging the replacement of fossil fuels in the country’s shipping industry, turning Greek islands to fully green destinations, creating offshore wind parks, and completing the phasing out of lignite dependency for electricity production by 2028.
