The building at Jarvis and Shuter streets was purchased in 1912 with money raised by Greek immigrants from throughout Ontario. It was a cornerstone for Toronto's early Greek community, serving as its first church, Greek school and community centre.

The plaque was unveiled as part of the commemoration of another important marker for the Greek community: the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, also known as the Greek War of Independence.

Toronto Mayor John Tory was on hand for the ceremony, along with leaders from the Greek community and politicians from all levels of government.
