A 96-year-old woman is being prosecuted, and even threatened with imprisonment, for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

According to Ahval, Aliye Yabansu, who lives in Turkey’s south-eastern Urfa province and only speaks Kurdish, spoke about the president without knowing that she was being videotaped.

The report said that the 96-year-old has psychological and physiological problems, but none-the-less, a  local court ruled last week that Yabansu should be treated in a high security health institution until she is no longer a supposed danger to society.

Prosecutors have requested that police ensure she is placed under medical care by Nov. 5 and that the chief medical officer of the Kayseri City Hospital issue a report on whether she needs treatment.

It is noted that a total of 7,790 citizens have been charged and 3,325 have been convicted on the charge of “insulting the president”.
