The government has "resigned from handling the pandemic and is simply biding its time until the deadly cycle is completed," SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Central Committee Secretary Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said in an interview to Efimerida ton Syntakton.
Tzanakopoulos said that the COVID-19 infections are breaking consecutive records and the number of ventilated patients has brought the health system to breaking point.
"In northern Greece it's gone over the edge, while we have nearly 350 casualties a week, the vaccination program has hit a wall and doctors are fainting before TV cameras," he said.
In addition, the government watches passively as prices climb for consumers, the main opposition party official said.
The only solution possible is increasing minimum wage to 800 euros, suspending the special tax on heating and vehicle fuel, and intervening in the market forcefully to break the pricing cartel.
"These are not things that by definition a government serving the interests of a sliver of a minority can do," Tzanakopoulos said.
