Covid-19 infections doubled over the last week in Greece said Health Ministry coronavirus committee official Vana Papaevangelou after noticeable 50% spike in cases.
During her regular televised briefing on Thursday, Papaevangelou noted that active infections in Greece have now reached 47,000.
Beds at intensive care units in Thessaloniki hospitals are 97%occupied, while a sharp rise in new infections is also seen among those aged over 60, she said.
Doctors and medical staff in the Greek national health system's Covid-19 wards are currently facing up to five times more work, where patients' oxygen sometimes runs out by day's end, instead of a week under less strenuous circumstances, Alternate Health Minister Mina Gaga noted at the briefing.
