Greek Maria Sakkari takes the second set. Triumphant debut by sets of 6-2 and 6-4 in 1:26 hour of play against the Polish Iga Swiatek, who is very affected by the defeat.
Iga is in tears as she faces the triple match point. Sakkari pulled her in for a hug at the net. Swiatek walks off the court with a towel over her head.
After the game Sakkari said.
“I actually have a good game to play against her. All three times I played her, I played one of the best matches of the season. Like even today, I think I was very solid in these conditions.”
“More than anything we’re human. She’s only 20yo. She’s going to have many more chances than I’ll have in the future because it’s only the beginning for her.
“She’s a very, very nice girl. We always have great practices and great chats.”
“I think finding the right way of serving here, it’s probably the key. You set up a point the way you want to. Definitely, I mean, having a percentage like that helps your game so much,” added Sakkari.
Maria Sakkari is now the player with the most wins (8) against top-10 opponents this season.
