The music is pumping and we are belting out a song at the top of our lungs…but the lyrics just don’t quite seem to make sense. We’ve all been there and sang that.
In fact, misinterpreted song lyrics are a fairly common and usually hilarious occurrence called ‘mondegreen’ - a word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of another word or phrase, especially in a song or poem.
From “Puppet on a String” instead of Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach”; “All the Singlets” instead of Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies” all the way to one of the most frequently misheard lyrics, the three time platinum song at the centre of a joke on an episode of “Friends” which, according to Phoebe, went something along the lines “Hold me closer Tony Danza” instead of Elton John’s “Hold me closer tiny dancer”. We’ve all been guilty of mishearing song lyrics that somehow, at the time, in some way, seemed to make sense to us.
But do not fear - you have not been alone. Some lyrics are so frequently misheard that they spawn a life of their own.
For example the “All the lonely Starbucks lovers” instead of Taylor Swift’s “Got a long list of ex-lovers” lyric was so frequently misheard by fans, that the singer actually poked fun at her own song on Valentine’s Day in 2015. In a now-deleted tweet, Swift wrote: “Sending my love to all the lonely Starbucks lovers out there this Valentine’s Day… even though that is not the correct lyric.” To which the Starbucks coffee chain playfully replied: “Wait, it’s not?”
Well this may have been the case but let bygones be bygones as you can now find the lyrics to your favourite songs on Spotify.

You can now sing louder and more confidently than ever as Spotify Lyrics are now available to all Free and Premium users globally across iOS and Android devices, desktops, gaming consoles and TVs, so that millions of fans can connect with the music and artists they love on a deeper – and more accurate – level.
Did someone say "Greek karaoke party"???!
Real-time lyrics will now be available during song playback, available on both free and subscription tiers.
Users can see the lyrics scroll as they listen to a song and they can also share these selected lyrics to their favourite tunes on social media platforms.
Ready to sing along? Here’s how to find Lyrics.
On the Spotify mobile app
- Tap on the “Now Playing View” on a song.
- While listening, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
- You’ll see track lyrics that scroll in real time as the song is playing!
- To share, simply tap the “Share” button at the bottom of the lyrics screen and then select the lyrics you want to share—and where you want to share it—via third-party platforms.
On the Spotify desktop app
- From the “Now Playing” bar, click on the microphone icon while a song is playing.
- Voila! You’ll see track lyrics that scroll in real time while the song plays.
On the SpotifyTV app
- Open the “Now Playing View” on a song.
- Navigate to the right corner to the “lyrics button” and select if you want to enable Lyrics.
- Once enabled, you’ll see the lyrics in the “Now Playing” View.
