Turks queue for bread as Erdoğan demands recognition of Occupied Northern Cyprus

By 2 years ago

In an effort to disorient public opinion in Turkey over the country's economic collapse, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is re-investing in a well-established tactic of disorientation, foreign policy attention against Greece and Cyprus.

In this context, Erdoğan is asking friendly countries to recognise the pseudo-state of Northern Cyprus which has been occupied by Turkey since 1974.

Speaking at the Economic Cooperation Summit held in Turkmenistan, the Turkish president called for the recognition of the so-called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" which is recognised by no other country but Turkey.

As Erdoğan claimed, this is the only way to resolve the Cyprus issue.

At the same time, citizens in Turkey facing misery due to the economic crisis are waiting in huge queues to buy a loaf of bread at half price.

For some time now, Turkey's three largest cities of Izmir, Istanbul and Ankara have been offering so-called "cheap" bread.

In recent days their sales have risen sharply.

Turkish citizens facing poverty due to the economic crisis are waiting in huge queues to buy a loaf of bread, at half the price of what is sold in bakeries.

The competent body decided to increase the fees and fines imposed by the state by 36.2%, with inflation hovering at 19%.

The Turkish currency, which continues to experience one record drop after another, plunges the country even deeper into the economic crisis it is experiencing.

This has brought citizens to the brink of impoverishment, as the country's net lower wage has shrunk to just 199 euros.

Many Turks admit that they cannot stop watching the exchange rate and constantly make calculations for their expenses - calculations that "change a hundred times a day."
