For the first time in its history, a football team has been established on the small and isolated island of Kastellorizo.

After painstaking efforts, the "Athletic Club Megisti Kastellorizo" is participating in the third category of the local Dodecanese Island football league.

"The association was founded mainly for national reasons," said the secretary of the club's board, Michalis Loizos, to AMNA.

Loizos is one of the founders of the club and works hard to achieve the goal.

"We also seek to create a football field so the young people of the island can gather around the club and be involved in football and sports in general. Efforts are already being made in this direction and it is expected that there will be results soon," he said.

The home ground of the team for now is the Kremasti stadium of Rhodes.

There are 25 football players for the club, some of whom come from Kastellorizo.

The goal is in the coming years to support the team with as many children as possible from Kastellorizo and to build a stadium on the island to host games there.

"The whole effort has been embraced by the local community," Loizos stressed, pointing out how important it is, for national reasons, to have this football team.

He also pointed out the great contribution from the president of the club, Giannis Hatzimanolis, a businessman from Rhodes.

The club is also in collaboration with the municipality of Megisti, which is expected to assist in this effort both in terms of operations and the construction of a stadium and sports infrastructure on the island of only 500 or so people.
