Greece's Attica Group and Nobel Maritime have decided to call time on long-time stalwarts of the country's ferry trades.
Attica subsidiary Hellenic Seaways Maritime has sold the Express Pegasus (built 1977) for recycling in Turkey, while Nobel Maritime's(built 1980) was beached in Chattogram this week.
The Italian-built Express Pegasus is expected to be beached at Aliaga in the very near future. The vessel departed Piraeus under tow on Wednesday, according to Greek ferry industry sources.
The Express Pegasus was inherited by Attica when it bought over Hellenic Seaways in 2018. The vessel has always been an odd fit in Attica's fleet of modern, mostly purpose-built.
The ship traded exclusively on marginal routes subsidised by the Greek government until it grounded on a remote island in the Dodecanese island chain in August 2020.
Refloated, it was taken back to Piraeus but according to industry sources, the hull damage was severe and, given the age of the vessel, not deemed economically worthwhile to repair.
