GREECE: Capodistrias Museum nominated for European Museum of the Year Award

Greece's Capodistrias Museum on the island of Corfu has been nominated for the prestigious European Museum of the Year Award in 2022.

The EMYA2022 Annual Conference and Award Ceremony will be held in Tartu, Estonia from 4 to 7 May 2022 where the Capodistrias Museum will compete with another 59 nominees for the top award.

The Capodistrias Museum is dedicated to the prominent Corfiot personality count Ioannis Capodistrias, first governor of Greece and top European diplomat; the only museum dedicated to the great Corfiot, Greek, and European politician of the 19th century.

In Koukouritsa, the Capodistrias’ family estate in the middle of Corfu, one will have the opportunity to follow the course of his life, through a narration that begins with his childhood years in Corfu and culminates with his assassination in Nafplio.

Some of the other nominees competing in next year's awards, include the Natural History Museum Weiherburg Innsbruck, Austria,  The Finnish Music Hall of Fame, Helsinki, Finland, the National Air and Space Museum of France, Le Bourget, France,  and the Museum of Cosmonautics Moscow, Russian Federation to name a few.

The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) was founded in 1977 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, with the aim of recognising excellence in the European museum scene.

The EMYA award scheme, unusually for its times, did not focus primarily on the quality or quantity of the collection or the quality or quantity of the research and documentation, but rather on the general atmosphere which visitors would encounter, and what they would experience, understand, enjoy, and take away with them as food for thought.
