New find in Epidaurus: Ancient statue of a woman in a robe

By 2 years ago

An important find came to light on December 16, at the agora of ancient Epidaurus - a life-size marble female statue that is still in good condition.

The statue was found intact, with the exception of the arms and head, which probably broke from a drop, SKAI reported.

The statue depicts a woman wearing a robe that is fastened to her left shoulder and arm.

A first assessment places the statue to being crafted during imperial Roman times.

The statue was transferred to a warehouse in the Asclepieion for storage, cleaning and maintenance.

Although the annual excavation period is over, the heavy rainfall revealed a small part of the back of the statue, hence revealing it.

With this discovery, the area was immediately excavated.
