An American man who believed he saw a burglar break into his home in an Ohio neighborhood shot and killed his own 16-year-old daughter, according to police and local US media.
Yesterday, around 04.30 local time, a woman called for help: Her 16-year-old daughter Jenny had been accidentally shot by her father who thought she was an intruder.
While waiting for the police, the two parents were begging their daughter to get up, reports local newspaper Columbus Dispatch, which was in possession of a recording of the phone call.
Unfortunately, the girl did not get up, and as the police report stated, she succumbed to her injuries an hour later in hospital.
"If you are the one to pull the trigger, it is really important to know what your target is," said a police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
According to the Columbus police report, this is the 202nd homicide in 2021 in this area of about 2 million inhabitants.
