Maria Sakkari has fallen to the USA’s Jessica Pegula at the Australian Open in two sets, 7-6, 6-3.
The ‘Sakkattack’ got off to a slow start, losing the first eight points in a row. The Greek swapped her racquet and fought back to break the serve of Pegula and force a tie break in the first set.
But Sakkari would ultimately go down in the tie-break following a string of unforced errors, before losing the first set.
Despite fighting back bravely, the Greek was in all sorts in the second set after having her serve broken.
Desperate to stay in the match, Sakkari fought hard to stay in the game, however it wasn’t her day, ultimately going down to 21st seed 6 – 3 Sakkari’s last match caps off what’s been a gritty performance at the Australian open by the fifth seeded Greek – matching her previous best performance at the tournament by making the 4th round.
