Snow and skiing go together, but across the Isthmus of Corinth?

The Elpis storm created unique opportunities for Greeks to experience snow in unique ways, and one man certainly took advantage by skiing his way across the Isthmus of Corinth.

Meanwhile, work to clear the snow off the streets in all the neighbourhoods of Athens has been completed and the crews of the municipality have already started clearing the squares, according to an announcement by the Municipality of Athens on Friday.

At the same time, the operation to remove the fallen trees and broken branches continues in all seven municipal districts.

It said the crews of the municipality had dealt with 969 out of 1,541 reported problems caused by the snowfall by the end of Thursday.

Also, the owners of vehicles that suffered damage from fallen trees due to bad weather started submitting electronic applications for compensation to the competent department of the Municipality of Athens.

At the same time, grade and high schools in Attica Region remained shut on Friday, following a decision of regional director George Patoulis in agreement with 66 mayors on Thursday.

The decision was prompted by problems due to low temperatures and transportation safety in the aftermath of a snowstorm earlier this week.

Decisions about whether to reopen nurseries and preschools lie with municipal authorities who will notify parents.

Elsewhere in Athens, a section of Syngrou Avenue near Hadrian's Arch that was shut following a powerful gas explosion early in the morning was reopened late on Wednesday night, Hellenic Police said.

The explosion, which preliminary reports attributed to a natural gas leak, injured an older man while the shock wave broke windows in buildings across the street, in the Makrigianni section of Athens.

The major artery connects the coast of Attica with downtown Athens, and was shut down in both directions at the junction with Vouliagmenis Avenue.
