A 23-year-old Albanian national with a history of soccer hooliganism was arrested for the murder of 19-year-old Alkis, an Aris soccer fan who was stabbed to death in Thessaloniki on Tuesday following a match between PAOK and ARIS football soccer teams.
The case has shocked Greece and led to strong public condemnation including by the prime minister, who asked the Citizen Protection Ministry to prioritize the crime’s investigation.
Following the incident, Greek celebrity lawyer Alexis Kougias has revealed he had been contacted by Aris football club to represent the family of the young Aris fan at court, at their expense.
In a statement Kougias said that he would not accept any legal fees to represent the family against the nearly 10 defendants who were PAOK fans, but would do it gratis.
The attack occurred when the perpetrators accosted the young man and two of his friends and demanded to know which club they supported. When they found out they were Aris fans they brutally attacked them, injuring two of them and killing the 19-year-old by stabbing him with a blunt instrument.
Video footage of the incident has been discovered, showing a group of people running from a narrow street to a main road and getting away in two vehicles. There is also a snapshot from the attack, during which the 19-year-old lost his life.
