Lidl Supermarket chain releases statement following elderly shoplifter incident

Supermarket chain Lidl came under fire in Greece after a 70-year-old woman tried to steal food worth 40 euros last Saturday as she was hungry.

The woman later was reported to be in severe financial difficulties and despite other customers offering to pay for the items and the police officers on the scene being hesitant to charge the lady with shoplifting the branch manager at the store insisted that the elderly woman face charges.

Social media ignited with messages for people to stop shopping at Lidl in support of the older woman.

Lidl Greece has released a statement on Thursday that it will not be taking any further action following public scrutiny over the incident.
