Where does Greece and Cyprus spend their money? (INTERACTIVE MAP)

The European Commission has announced an interactive visualisation tool on 'Government expenditure by function' that has the most recent data (2020) for EU Members States.

The interactive tool allows you to find out how much of an EU Member State's spending goes to social protection, health or economic affairs.

According to the latest data, Greece spends the following per sector:

  • Social protection (22.5% of GDP)
  • Economic affairs (9.9% of GDP)
  • General public services (8.4% of GDP)
  • Health (6.7% of GDP)
  • Defence (2.6% of GDP)
  • Public order and safety (2.4% of GDP)
  • Environmental protection (1.6% of GDP)
  • Recreation, culture and religion (1% of GDP)
  • Housing and community amenities (0.3% of GDP)

 

Meanwhile expenditure in neighbouring Cyprus, is as follows:

  • Social protection (13.6% of GDP)
  • General public services (7.6% of GDP)
  • Education (5.9% of GDP)
  • Housing and community amenities (1.5% of GDP)
  • Public order and safety (1.9% of GDP)
  • Defence (1.9% of GDP)
  • Economic affairs (5.6% of GDP)
  • Health (5.9% of GDP)
