How Turkish media responded to Mitsotakis-Erdoğan meeting: "Let the Aegean become a sea of peace"

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Mitsotakis

Under the headline "Let the Aegean become a sea of peace" on its front page, the Turkish daily Hürriyet reported on yesterday's meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Istanbul.

As a whole, the Turkish media, most of them pro-government and controlled by Erdoğan, report with positive comments on the meeting between the two leaders, pointing out, however, that the main differences between Turkey and Greece remain.

"Let's open a new page," Yeni Şafak's headline wrote, noting that it has been decided to keep the channels of communication open between the two countries and to improve bilateral relations.

"During the meeting, Erdoğan gave the message: 'Problems can be resolved through a sincere and honest dialogue'. As two neighbouring countries, we need to talk constantly, not just in times of crisis," said a Milliyet article entitled "We can solve problems through dialogue."

An article in the Takvim newspaper talks about "melting the ice" between Erdoğan and Mitsotaki, while Sözcü points out that: "the crisis in Ukraine leads to the normalisation of relations" between Turkey and Greece.

"Turkish President Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis have agreed to improve bilateral relations," CNN Türk reported.

Aksam writes about "Crisis meeting in Istanbul - Erdoğan welcomed the Greek Prime Minister", while t24 points out that Erdoğan and Mitsotakis agreed on the fact that "Turkey and Greece have a special responsibility for the change of European architecture, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine."

"The meeting, which lasted about two hours, was closed to the media. The mutual and regional benefits from the increase of the cooperation and the focus on the positive agenda were emphasised," writes Habertürk.

"In Istanbul, the foundations were laid for the improvement of bilateral relations," comments Haber 7 noting that there are significant differences between the two countries.

"Echo of the meeting between President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Greece: Substantial dialogue" comments TR Haber, broadcasting the reactions of the Greek press, for Sunday's meeting.
