Under the baton of popular Greek composer and conductor Themos Mexis, on Friday 25th March, 200 local talented performers will put on an unforgettable concert at Sydney Town Hall and take attendees on a beautiful musical journey.
Themos Mexis will conduct The Sydney Youth Orchestra, The National Metropolitan Choir of Australia, Soloists: Sandy Constandopedos (vocals); Michael Platyrrahos (Cretan Lyra); Tassos Lambrou and Andrew Belekas (Bouzouki), with The Sydney Thistle Highland Pipe Band and The Hellenic Lyceum Youth in the grand finale to commemorate freedom and Greece’s independence.
Originally booked for November 26, 2021, this concert has been long-awaited. “Covid-19 had other plans. The choir, like everyone else, we struggled. And we couldn’t get together because of the pandemic. Not being able to rehearse, individuals being afraid, it was tough,” Themos tells GCT exclusively.
But that didn’t stop the popular Greek composer and conductor, instead of conducting practices over zoom. “As you can imagine there was a lapse of time, music is of course is everything. All I could do was tell everyone ‘go on mute and just listen to me. When I sing your voice, please record it and send it to me. It was extremely difficult,” he says.
With the support of His Eminence, Archbishop Makarios, they all persevered through many challenges and will finally be able to present to Sydneysiders this amazing and most auspicious event.
“We’ve reached a stage where I am pretty pleased and happy. It will be a fantastic concert,” Themos exclaims.
Many Sydneysiders have followed this journey over the past 2 years, and in less than a week they will be able to see it live.
“Support local talent and we certainly need this. We constantly bringing from overseas, I can’t understand why when we have perfectly good talent. All they need is support. I’m really thrilled.”
We look forward to seeing GCT followers on the night.
