Greece marks Independence Day with military parade GCT(Video)

Greece commemorated on Friday the 201st anniversary of the Greek Independence Day with a military parade in the center of Athens.

“The anniversary of the revolution, which we honored with today’s parade, reminds us that nations receive their place on the map of history with faith in their own strength, unity and passion for freedom,” Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou told journalists.

The parade in Athens – just as in several cities across the country — was held under COVID-19 safety rules.

A small crowd of people waved Greek national flags as mechanized units and foot soldiers marched in front of the parliament. Meanwhile, flights of Armed Forces aircraft and helicopters flashed above.

The dignitaries attending the event included France’s Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly, who was in Athens to sign a bilateral procurement agreement the previous day.

Under this agreement, Greece will receive three Belharra-class navy frigates, with an option for a fourth, as well as six Rafale fighter jets in addition to the previously agreed purchase of 18 aircraft.
