Australian government funds $4.9 million for ANZAC Remembrance Trail on Lemnos

The Australian government has approved $4.9 million in funding for the creation of a Remembrance Trail on the Greek island of Lemnos in recognition of the Australian doctors, nurses and other service personnel who served there during the First World War, announced the Lemnos1915 committee, a sub committee of the Lemnian Association of NSW "Maroula" Club Ltd.
The seeds for the ambitious project were first sown by the committee with the assistance
of the ever active former Consul General of Greece in Sydney Dr Stavros Kyrimis and Kevin Sumption PSM Previous CEO & Director, Australian National Maritime Museum.

In its announcement the association  thanked Dr Stavros Kyrimis and Kevin Sumption for their work along with various Australian and Greek agencies that made this project a reality including:  the Australian Federal Government, the Greek Government in particular the Greek Department of Defence, the Mayor of Lemnos, Mr Dimitrios Marinakis and the Australian Embassy, Greece.

A special thank you to the team at the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs – Overseas Memorials Division who have worked so hard on this project that will honour the stories of Anzac soldiers and nurses who served on Lemnos in 1915.

"We cannot wait to walk in the footsteps of the Anzac soldiers and Nurses of 1915 on this remembrance trail in the near future. See you there," concluded the announcement.
