Ten unaccompanied Ukrainian refugee children aged 10 months to 17 years from the Ukrainian city of Slavutych arrived in Athens on Holy Saturday.
A statement by the Migration & Asylum Ministry said the children and three chaperones arrived at the Promachonas Greek border post with Bulgaria and were escorted by police cars to Athens.
Greek and Ukrainian ministries worked together with embassies and Greek police for what is expected to be the first of future missions, while the contribution of Odessa-based businessman Pantelis Boubouras was decisive in ensuring the children made it safely to Greece.
The children are currently staying in facilities of "The Home Project", and are additionally supported by the International Migration for Organization, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the NGO Metadrasi.
Greece and Ukraine have signed a protocol of collaboration to host and protect unaccompanied children of war, while the Greek prime minister has welcomed the hosting of Ukrainian refugees in Greece for as long as necessary.
