Passenger traffic at Greek airports has surged by 365 per cent in March reaching a total of 1.89 million, compared to 406,879 passengers same time last year, reported Schengen Visa info.

Per the media outlet, according to data from the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, 21,228 flights were operated, with 12,577 of those being domestic and 8,651 international – representing a surge of 93.1 per cent compared to 2021, when 10,996 flights to and from Greece were operated.

‘Furthermore, international arrival in March 2022 jumped by 676.8 per cent peaking at 523,533 passengers, compared to the corresponding time in 2021, when the arrivals of foreign passengers were 67,396 passengers.

‘In addition, the total number of passengers, including those domestic and international, increased by 29 per cent during the first quarter of 2022, recording a surge of nearly 300 per cent. More specifically, 1.1 million passengers visited Greece in the first quarter of 2021, while in 2020 this figure exceeded 4.9 million.

‘As per flights operated during the first three months of 2022, those peaked at 56,323, surging by 81.7 per cent, while those rates stood at 30,994 operated flights in 2021.

‘However, the recovery rates, although constant, still don’t suffice for the aviation sector to reach the pre-pandemic levels, as during the first quarter of 2019, 65,437 flights were operated – leaving 2022 rates behind by 13.9 per cent. In total, the passenger traffic was 6,684,573 million in the quarter of January / March 2019, decreasing by 32.8 per cent this year.’
